This is a hike to a high point overlooking Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu Lake, and the red rock country in the vicinity of these areas. We actually did not hike to Mesa del Yeso as advertised as that area is better accessed from other trail heads however we did go to where I wanted to get to. The trip was done by an abbreviated route due to some concerns over possible T storms on hike day.
This area is accessed from the Kitchen Mesa trail head. You hike up to the mesa proper and then take off into the wild and wooly back country riven by shallow, steep canyons. The key is to stay high whenever possible.
Thanks to that 81 year old force of nature Nancy King for joining me on this adventure. Our stats for the day were 6.5 miles, 1801 feet of climbing, and 4.5 hours hike time.
